Marathi People: Ancient and Modern Cultural Leaders

Marathi is a unique cultural phenomenon that arose in India and later spread throughout the world. People who did not know that this is a whole nation with its history and heroes is surprised to find that the number of Marathi is more than 80 million people! And this is the data for 2008. Many are very surprised that the most important historical figures of India, about whom dozens of books were written and the same number of films were shot, were part of the people of Marathi. Vinoba Bhave

He is a famous and very influential philosopher, scholar and religious scholar and politician.

Vinoba originated from the brahman family. In 1916 he became a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. In the 1920s and 1930s, he was repeatedly arrested for taking part in actions against British colonial rule. In 1940, Vinoba Bhave was arrested for protesting India’s involvement in World War II. He was released in 1944; after the assassination of Gandhi (January 30, 1948), he became one of the main leaders of the Ghando global movement. In independent India, Vinoba initiated a number of public campaigns, including actions aimed at redistributing land in favor of the peasantry.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale

Gopal was one of the key figures in the difficult case of the national liberation movement of India at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was an influential person in such an iconic for the history of India organization as the Indian National Congress. He received a high-quality education in his homeland, in the ancient and colorful city of Bombay. His alma mater was Elphinstone College. Gopal made a significant contribution to the educational system of India, at a time when he was actively teaching history and political economy in one of the colleges of Pune. According to the opinion of specialists in Indian history, his main contribution was made when he founded the Society of Servants of India and became the author of many social and domestic reforms.

Dadasaheb Phalke 

Dadasaheb Phalke is an Indian director, producer, screenwriter, known as the “father of Indian cinema”.

His debut film “Raja Harishchandra”, filmed in 1913, was India’s first silent feature film. Dadasaheb Phalke is the author of 95 full-length and 26 short films.

The highest cinematic award of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema was named in his honor.

Sadashiv Dattaray Amrapurkar

Sadashiv Dattaray Amrapurkar is an Indian actor and public figure. Best known for his roles in the film industry in Hindi and Marathi between 1983 and 1999. During his career spanning three decades, Amrapurkar starred in more than 300 films in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Oriya, and Hariani. He is a winner of 2 Filmfare Awards in various game categories. Today he is called one of the icons of Indian film industry and a man who in many ways influenced the boom in the popularity of Bollywood.
